Guest Speaker - Reuben Paterson, Glitter for your garden

We  are honoured and excited to have Reuben Paterson agree to entertain us  with an illustrated lecture. Reuben is one of New Zealand's most dynamic  and important artists. Reuben has exhibited around the world and his  works are in many international public collections with major public  commissions in New Zealand and abroad.

Reuben's  talk will be FREE for GDSNZ financial members. Non-members, guests and  friends are very welcome to join us for just $20 which will include a  glass of wine/juice and a bite to eat after the event. Payment of $20 via CASH at the door or tickets available below. Reuben has given us permission to livestream his lecture but this will only be available to GDSNZ members in the members-only section on our GDSNZ website.

Operating  across a wide range of mediums, Paterson is predominantly linked to his  use of glitter and diamond dust on canvas or paper. Paterson is of  Ngati Rangitihi, Ngai Tuhoe, Tuhourangi and Scottish descent. He  completed a degree in Fine Arts at Elam University in 1997. Often  referencing botanical, retro, or Māori iconography, his paintings shine  and shimmer on the surface, yet also contain a deeper sense of movement  and significance. As we move around his works, we can see beyond and  into the universe of nature; the unknown and known; culture and  whakapapa. In his artworks, layers of meaning are explored within the  swirl of botanical images, each flower a metaphor for life, death,  birth, renewal, light and darkness. What you may not have known is that  he has been surrounded by the botanical throughout his life. His Maori  influenced works are a nod to his late father Louis Paterson, while the  paisley patterns and nostalgic florals pay homage to his maternal side.  His father was a landscape gardener, while his mother, Sue Foss, was an  avid gardener. Paterson too has a garden, where he experiences through  nature the process of birth and renewal, colour and symbol, season and  metaphor. (Sources: Reuben Paterson CV, thecentral.co.nz)
