Jo Wakelin's very sustainable 'Dry Garden' in Central Otago is a perfect example of sustainability in a garden. Jo's garden was designed to embrace the harshness of the arid climate, where rainfall is scarce and the soil a nutrient-poor glacial outwash. Jo does not irrigate or fertilise, but relies on resilient climate-appropriate species. Inspired by Beth Chatto's gravel garden in Essex, southeast England, Jo uses a mineral gravel mulch to conserve moisture, letting the natural rhythm of the seasons shape the garden's character.
