Review: Fern Glen Native Plant Garden and Birkenhead Point Organic Garden Visits - 29 April 2016

On a clear sunny day at the end of April, members met at Fern Glen Native Plant Garden on Kauri Road, Birkenhead. This garden was developed by Muriel and Bill Fisher, who are passionate advocates of NZ native plants. We were taken on a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour by Malcolm Fisher - son of Muriel, and Neville Arbury. We were introduced to a botanical treasure trove of unusual native plants as we wandered through beautiful, thriving bush areas.

Our next destination that day was an organic/permaculture garden in the heart of Birkenhead Point. The owners, Linda and Goeff, introduced us to their very hot composing methods and worm farms. Their vegetable gardens and fruit trees were bursting with vitality and hens and bee hives completed the picture. Their productive garden is an inspiring example of what can be accomplished in an ordinary suburban section with compost, ingenuity and passion.
