Garden 1: Emmett St, Herne Bay
The garden is designed to have a strong relationship with the Architectural character of the area. The brick walls built from brick salvaged from the Christchurch earthquake could have been remnants of a larger garden. The plantings focus on seasonality and texture as well as being predominantly productive or medicinal. As the house is separated from the garden by the gradient of the site, the garden is designed to be viewed from above and to lure the visitors down into the garden. The owners are lovers of old literature particularly Katherine Mansfield and so the garden too could belong to that time.
Garden 2: Propsect Tce, Mt Eden
The garden was created to form around the property’s natural contours using stone from the site to anchor the slope. In the front the planting is all native and more austere, with native groundcovers flowing down the bank over the rocks as water would.
Plants include flowering natives such as geranium, hibiscus and linum that create unexpected moments of softness during the year. The back garden contrasts strongly to this with lush plantings of subtropical exotics and natives. Once again rock is used to create places to sit and to retain slopes. The pool’s moat is planted in papyrus to create a lagoon effect that contrasts well with the dark paving and pool surface. The informal natural plantings are intended to create a strong contrast and bring to life the crisp, controlled form of the architecture. The vegetable gardens by the back stables are designed to complement this old building and to reflect the area’s history.
Xanthe White is one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded landscape designers. Her awards include a Silver-Gilt award at the 2006 Chelsea Flower Show and Silver at the 2011 Chelsea Flower Show. She has twice been introduced to the Queen.
She has also several times won Supreme award for design, Supreme award for construction, Supreme award for lighting as well as Gold, Silver and People’s Choice awards at the Ellerslie International Flower show. Her Auckland-based company Xanthe White Design specialises in designing residential, rural and interior landscapes as well as temporary living permanent garden installations.
Xanthe strongly believes sustainability can be achieved through passive design. Rather than reinventing the wheel, she believes in creating simple, functional living spaces, then filling in gaps and underused spaces as diversely as possible. Gardeners are essential to this approach as their individual tastes and interests result in cities that are a rich tapestry of life. Individuals taking an interest in their own living spaces create urban and suburban environments that are far more complex than any city planner could ever achieve.
In 2009 Xanthe wrote her first book, Organic Vegetable Gardening. She is a columnist for the New Zealand Gardener magazine and the Listener. She recently released her second book The Natural Garden which explores her signature style of plant-based landscape design.Back to Designers index page
