The challenge here was how to provide the owners of this Arts & Crafts home with a relaxed exterior extension of the recently renovated indoor living areas. Modernist elements of timber, glass and concrete have been sympathetically harmonised, resulting in a stunning contrast to the borrowed landscape of the glowing red brick of St Michael’s Church in the background. By raising the whole area, the garden and existing pool are now linked, via an intermediary wooden deck with pizza oven, to the upper deck and gas fire extending from the internal living area. Floating concrete bridges link islands of lawn, surrounded by a sea of rain lilies, Zephyranthes candida, whileother bold plantings in blocks and lines further reinforce the garden forms.
Since completing a Diploma of Landscape Design from Unitec, Sally has worked on both residential and commercial projects. The scope of this work has ranged from larger projects in collaboration with others, to smaller but no less significant projects and consultations.
Irrespective of the scale or budget, Sally likes to give a sense of uniqueness to a project - whether that uniqueness is attained by the types of materials used in construction or the plant combinations incorporated into the design.
Making spaces work in both functional and aesthetic ways is an ongoing challenge. Accommodating the needs of the client and constraints of the budget, the potential of the site and utilising the existing features is a process of finding the balance, yet continually searching for a point of difference.Back to Designers index page
