Designer Jo Hamilton and her husband Mark moved to this apartment nearly two years ago, leaving behind an established garden. The attraction was the large deck which wraps around two sides of the apartment allowing them to create four distinct zones. First, on the eastern side, the ‘Persian Garden’ with water, if only in a bowl, perfume provided by stephanotis, plumeria and citrus and a sense of enclosure - one ‘wall’ a line of potted citrus against the glass balustrade. The western side is longer and includes an outdoor dining area and an extensive potted edible garden nestled in the sheltered space under the kitchen window and against a concrete wall. Where the two sides meet is a chill-out zone with sun lounger and butterfly chairs. They inherited some large concrete planters, but everything else, including pots, troughs, trees, shrubs, potting mix and much, much more came up the lift and through the apartment in their trusty wheel barrow.
Joanna has been designing gardens in the greater Auckland area for 11 years having graduated from Unitec with a Diploma in Landscape Design. Completed projects include large and small city gardens, courtyard and apartment gardens, country and coastal properties.
She loves the problem solving aspect of her work and tends to 'live and breathe' the project she is currently working on in order to create a garden that is special and unique for its owners. Listening to her clients carefully is an important part of achieving a happy outcome.
In her mind when designing are the more subtle aspects of the garden, such as light and shade, scale and proportion, which can work together to delight and lift the spirit. She also appreciates the importance of sound site analysis and workable solutions. She strives to design gardens that read well on installation, but will increase in beauty and atmosphere as they mature and she loves working with both soft and hard landscaping elements in a garden, developing the interplay between the two.
Completed Unitec Diploma of Landscape Design and have been working in this field for 15 years largely in urban and greater Auckland.
Have also designed rural and semi rural gardens in Northland, Waikato and Canterbury
Gardens have been featured in Home and New Zealand Gardener magazines and the Herald feature articles.Back to Designers index page
