Garden: Sarsfield St, Herne Bay

This garden project involved re-invigorating an established but tired garden containing several mature trees and palms.

In keeping with the repetitive curves used as a motif throughout both the Art & Crafts-style house and its original garden, Damian has used concrete and timber to good effect, formatting new elements in a manner that compliments and incorporates the existing curved masonry fences and retaining walls.

At the lower level, outside a home office, a small courtyard has been provided as an outdoor seating space and new curved concrete steps have been added, leading to the relocated front door.

At the rear of the property, a private garden opening out from the kitchen, dining and living area has undergone a radical renovation, involving the construction of a sweeping, curved-edge, hardwood deck over the original concrete patio. An extended wooden bench seat runs invitingly along one end of this restful open space. At the back of this garden, a large outdoor artwork by Desna Whaanga-Schollum provides a striking focal point, with generous concrete bowl planters adding to the circular theme while also providing practical opportunities for both feature and edible planting.

Damian has a Diploma in Landscape Design and has worked as a self-employed garden designer, predominantly in Auckland trading as Urbanite Landscape Design, for more than 12 years. He has also worked as a garden design tutor at Unitec Institute of Technology and is professionally accredited to the Garden Design society of New Zealand.

Damian believes in a strong basic structure softened by plants, materials and texture. In particular, he enjoys the fulfilment that comes from the creative problem solving inherent in garden design, balancing the various inputs and arriving at a solution that is fresh, enduring and aesthetically pleasing, yet doesn’t appear over-designed. Seeing the finished result, where he feels that he has achieved the best possible outcome for the site and, first and foremost, provided the owners with functional, useable spaces that offer respite in a way that is specifically suited to their lifestyle, gives him enormous personal job satisfaction.
