Heaton Grove Birkenhead
This garden design draws on some of the Japanese themes evident in the 1970’s modernist architecture and remaining original garden planting. Simple materials and a mix of native, exotic and productive plants are applied in a deliberate manner and combine to deliver a garden that is strong on style but still human and approachable. Remnants of the original garden are re-used and printed onto the new design. A series of level areas provide for easy outdoor living while several mature trees provide welcome summer shade and an ideal play environment for children.
Clifton Rd, Herne Bay
The success of this small garden lies in a simple, clear design brought to life by craftsmen with an exacting eye for detail. The property lies on a north facing slope near Auckland’s inner harbour, dominated by four mature pohutukawa trees. The main thrust of the design brief was to create a small dipping pool in the rear yard as well as setting aside places for productive gardening, space for young children to play and garden, and improving access up and down the site. Textural materials and planting have been thoughtfully selected to reflect something of Auckland’s volcanic and coastal environment.
